About Chelsea
Chelsea Bonini brings over three decades of experience in San Mateo County education as a teacher, attorney, and elected leader dedicated to academic excellence and equitable opportunities for all students.
Currently serving as President of the San Mateo County School Boards Association, Chelsea was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Education in 2020 and re-elected in 2024, representing Area 4 and serving as Board President in 2024. She is a member of the CSBA Delegate Assembly and serves on planning committees for CSBA conferences.
Chelsea's teaching career spans kindergarten and first grade in South San Francisco USD (1994-1998) to second grade in Los Altos (2024-2025), with two decades as an Art in Action teacher for grades K-5 and special education. She also served as Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara University School of Law. As legal counsel, she provided pro bono services to educational associations and foundations while serving school districts and special districts.
Her public service includes roles as SMCOE Personnel Commissioner, San Mateo County Behavioral Health Commissioner, County Commission on Disabilities Commissioner, and San Mateo-Foster City School Board Trustee. This comprehensive engagement across education, mental health, and disability services demonstrates her collaborative, systems-level approach.
Chelsea's focus on educational excellence for all students drives her commitment to high expectations, rigorous curriculum, and robust support systems accessible to every child. Her work on the County Board has emphasized fiscal accountability and transparency, defining clear norms, protocols, and policies that strengthen shared governance between the County Board and County Office of Education.
Chelsea holds a J.D. from U.C. Hastings College of Law, an M.A. in Educational Administration & Leadership from San Francisco State University, a B.S. in Elementary Education and Psychology, and a California Administrative Services Credential.
Chelsea lives in San Mateo with her husband and two sons.
